Stellar Signals of a Baryon-Number-Violating Long Range Scalar Force

Presented by Dr. Hooman DAVOUDIASL on 15 Sep 2023 from 09:30 to 10:00

Content

We study the novel possibility that a long range scalar force may lead to violation of baryon number. We illustrate that this scenario can lead to vastly disparate nucleon lifetimes in different astronomical environments, and yield a number of potentially observable effects, such as a flux of neutrinos above 10 MeV from the Sun and heating of old neutron stars. We find that neutron star heating provides the strongest present and near term bounds. The postulated ultralight scalar could constitute the dark matter of the Universe. Thus, matter-enhanced baryon number violation could be a signal of ultralight dark matter, which has apparently been overlooked so far.
