Public transport in Warsaw

Please note:

All public transportation tickets can be purchased at ZTM points, in some newspaper kiosks and at ticket machines located in the metro stations, bus stops, as well as on some buses and trams. You can pay either with cash or by card. Tickets can be used for all means of transport. You can select a 20-, 75- or 90-minute ticket. Longer-term options include one-day and weekend tickets.
Tickets must be validated immediately after boarding a bus or tram, or at the gates leading to metro platforms. Luggage and animals can be taken on public transport free of charge.

Currency

The Polish currency unit is Polish Zloty (PLN), divided into 100 Groszy. Current exchange rate on: www.nbp.pl

1 GBP = PLN 5,36 (January 2023)

Most foreign currencies can be easily exchanged either in banks or in private exchange offices (“kantor”). Always double check online if the exchange rate makes sense.

Foreign currency (cash) is not acceptable in shops. When paying with card, always use the option to pay in local currency on the terminal, as it is always cheaper.

Shops

The common opening hours are 10.00 am  – 7.00 pm Monday to Friday.
​​​​​​On Saturdays shops are mostly closed at 2 p.m. and generally closed on Sundays.​​​​​
Payment in shops: debit/credit cards or by cash (Polish money, very few accept EUR).

Emergency calls from phone boxes are free of charge.

Credit cards

Debit / credit cards accepted in Poland: Visa, MasterCard, American Express. Cash withdrawal machines, restaurants, car rental agencies and most shops accept all major debit / credit cards.

Post offices

Post offices are open Monday to Friday 8.00 am – 4.00 pm and closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Post boxes are red and post is usually collected twice daily. Stamps can be bought only at post offices.

Banks

Banks are open Monday to Friday 8.00 am – 6.00 pm and are closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
